Let’s be honest: Melbourne delivers some of the best temperate marine life in the world. From the neon-colored Weedy Seadragons at Rye Pier to the historic wrecks outside Port Phillip Bay, local diving is world-class.
However, when winter rolls in or even during early spring. Water temperatures in Port Phillip Bay dip down to 11°C to 13°C.
If you’ve ever found yourself shivering through a surface interval, cutting a dive short because your toes and fingers went numb, or leaving your gear in the shed from May to October, you’re not alone. The solution? Making the switch to drysuit diving.
What is Drysuit Diving? (And How Does It Work?)
Unlike a traditional neoprene wetsuit, which traps a thin layer of water against your skin that your body heat must warm up. A drysuit keeps you completely dry.
A drysuit seals out the ocean using watertight wrist and neck seals (latex, silicone, or neoprene) paired with a heavy-duty waterproof zipper. Because water isn’t touching your skin, your warmth comes from the undergarment thermal layers you wear inside the suit.
How it works underwater?
Your drysuit connects directly to your scuba tank via a low-pressure inflator hose. As you descend, you inject small bursts of air into the suit to eliminate "suit squeeze" and maintain insulation. As you ascend, an automatic dump valve on your shoulder releases the expanding air.
4 Reasons Melbourne Divers Love Diving Dry
1. Extend Your Dive Season to 365 Days
Winter in Victoria actually brings some of the clearest visibility of the year. Calm days in July and August frequently deliver crystal-clear water along the Mornington Peninsula. With a drysuit, you won't miss out on prime winter conditions just because of the water temp.
2. Warmer Surface Intervals
There’s nothing worse than peeling off a soaking-wet 7mm wetsuit on a windy day at Blairgowrie Pier. In a drysuit, you strip off the outer shell, stay in your cozy thermal fleece, and enjoy a warm coffee on the deck in total comfort.
3. Longer Bottom Times & Better Air Consumption
When your body gets cold, it burns through breathing gas much faster working to stay warm. Staying warm and relaxed helps keep your air consumption low, letting you enjoy longer, more comfortable dives.
4. Customisable Thermal Protection
Water temperature dropped a couple of degrees? Simply swap to a thicker undergarment fleece. Diving in warmer autumn conditions? Wear a lightweight thermal base layer. You control your microclimate.
Do You Need a Certification to Dive Dry?
Yes! Managing air space in your suit, controlling buoyancy using both your BCD and drysuit, and mastering emergency drills (like venting trapped air from your feet) require proper technique.
Whether you originally learned to dive through PADI, SDI, SSI, or NAUI, taking an SDI Dry Suit Diver course gives you full certification to rent or dive dry anywhere in the world.
SDI vs. PADI Drysuit Certification: What’s the Difference?
If you hold a PADI Open Water certification (or any other WRSTC agency card), you might wonder if you must do a PADI drysuit course. The simple answer is no!
-
100% Globally Recognized: SDI and PADI operate under the same global training standards (WRSTC). An SDI Dry Suit Diver card is accepted at every dive resort, liveaboard, and dive shop worldwide. Just like a PADI card.
-
Modern eLearning & Flexibility: SDI was created by tech divers to bring modern, streamlined learning to recreational scuba. Their digital platforms and practical skill sessions focus heavily on trim, buoyancy, and real-world Melbourne conditions.
-
Seamless Cross-Over: Your previous PADI certifications count directly as prerequisites for SDI specialty courses. You can dive with an SDI card while continuing down any agency path you choose.
