Learn to plan and safely operate a Diver Propulsion Vehicle (DPV) in a non-overhead environment. The SDI Diver Propulsion Vehicle Diver course combines online knowledge development, instructor-led review and two shore dives using a DPV.
This specialty course is suitable for certified divers who want to cover more distance underwater while understanding DPV procedures, limitations and emergency considerations.
What you will learn
DPV physics and dive planning
- Pressure, ascent and descent considerations.
- Air consumption, decompression theory and dive-computer planning.
- DPV-specific planning and determining the turn-around point.
Choosing and preparing a DPV
- Common DPV types, features and accessories.
- Battery endurance, safe charging and maximising battery life.
- Maintenance, storage and transportation.
DPV operation and procedures
- Pre-dive preparation and equipment checks.
- Water entries, surface use, orientation and controlled descents.
- Underwater positioning, tandem procedures, ascents and exits.
- Post-dive care and maintenance.
Safety and problem management
- Responding to vehicle failure.
- Avoiding propeller entanglement and obstructions.
- Managing depth, ascent, descent and separation risks.

What is included
- SDI eLearning and certification fee.

What is not included

- Dive medical examination, if required.
- Spool and surface marker buoy (DSMB), which can be purchased during the theory session.
- Dive torch and slate; these are optional but recommended for underwater communication.
A discounted Computer Nitrox Diver course may be combined with this course for $199, saving $100. Contact us before booking to confirm availability.
DPV course prerequisites
- Open Water Scuba Diver, Junior Open Water Scuba Diver or an equivalent certification.
- Minimum age of 12. Students under 18 require parent or guardian consent.
- Completion of the online knowledge development before the course begins.
- Appropriate fitness to dive and any required medical clearance.
Medical requirements and what to bring
Review the diver medical questionnaire and fitness-to-dive information before the course. If you answer “yes” to any medical question, provide written clearance from a medical practitioner before training. Email the document to admin@simpledive.com.au at least seven days before the course.
