AIDA 2 Freediver
Details
Ready to leave the pool behind and discover the true weightlessness of the deep blue? The AIDA 2 course is the foundational certification for anyone looking to become a fully recognized, autonomous open-water freediver.
While AIDA 1 introduces you to the concept of breath-holding, AIDA 2 is where the real adventure begins. Over this course, you will master the skills necessary to dive safely to depths of up to 20 meters (65 feet). You will learn to unlock your body’s natural aquatic instincts, overcome the psychological barriers of depth, and experience the ocean in a completely new, serene way.
What You Will Learn
The AIDA 2 course is a comprehensive program split across classroom theory, pool sessions (Dynamic and Static Apnea), and open-water depth disciplines.
-
Advanced Physiology: Dive deeper into the Mammalian Dive Reflex and understand how your body safely adapts to pressure at depth.
-
Frenzel Equalization: Learn and practice the Frenzel technique—the gold standard equalization method for effortless depth diving.
-
Technique Efficiency: Perfect your duck dives, body streamlining, and finning technique to maximize every ounce of energy.
-
Safety & Rescue Procedures: Master open-water rescue techniques, loss of motor control (LMC) management, and blackout rescue protocols.
-
Environmental Awareness: Understand buoy systems, line handling, open-water currents, and responsible marine interaction.
Prerequisites
-
Must be 18 years of age or older.
-
Must be able to swim at least 200 meters non-stop without fins (or 300 meters with mask, snorkel, and fins).
-
No prior freediving certification is strictly required if you are already comfortable in the water, though an AIDA 1 course or snorkeling experience is helpful.
FAQ
Do I need to be able to hold my breath for a long time before taking this course?
Not at all! A common misconception is that you need a massive lung capacity to start. We will teach you relaxation and breathing techniques that will naturally and safely extend your breath-hold time far beyond what you think you are capable of.
What happens if I can't meet the depth or time requirements?
Don't stress! AIDA 2 is a performance-based course, but it is taught in a supportive, relaxed manner. If you don't meet the requirements (e.g., you struggle to hit 16 meters or hold your breath for 2 minutes), you will not "fail." Instead, you will receive a "Referral." You have up to one year to return to any AIDA instructor globally to complete your remaining requirements and claim your certificate.
I have trouble popping my ears when I scuba dive or snorkel. Can I still do AIDA 2?
Yes! Equalization issues are the most common hurdle for beginners. In AIDA 2, we dedicate a lot of time to teaching the Frenzel technique, which uses your tongue and throat muscles rather than your lungs to equalize. It is much gentler and more effective than the Valsalva method typically used in scuba diving.
Why should I choose AIDA over other training agencies (like PADI or SSI)?
AIDA (Association Internationale pour le Développement de l'Apnée) is the original, democratic federation dedicated purely to freediving. Because it was created by freedivers for freedivers, its safety standards and educational steps are highly respected worldwide. An AIDA 2 card is globally recognized and allows you to smoothly transition into courses with any other major agency.
Do I need to buy those long freediving fins before the course?
It isn't necessary. While long fins make diving much more efficient, standard snorkeling fins can be used for the pool sessions, and most schools will rent or provide long fins for the open-water days. We highly recommend waiting until after your course to buy gear, as your instructor can guide you on the right blade stiffness and foot pocket fit.
